STEWART OF TERRY, THE 2013 ANGEL IN ADOPTION HONOREE FOR MISSISSIPPI 2013-10-08 2013 2013-10 Republican House MS Thad Cochran C000567 www.cochran.senate.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today congratulated Karen P. Stewart of Terry, who is being honored in Washington for her work to expand adoption services in Mississippi. Stewart, who was nominated by Cochran as Mississippi’s 2013 Angel in Adoption, is being honored this week as part of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s annual “Angels in Adoption” program.  Stewart is branch director for Bethany Christian Services of Mississippi. She is a Licensed Master Social Worker. “I commend Mrs. Stewart for her dedication to a career that has had such a positive impact on so many lives.  The Angels in Adoption program is recognizing her for her special ability to work with both expectant and adoptive parents to create an adoption plan that works best for each child,” Cochran said. Stewart has worked with Bethany Christian Services of Mississippi since 1987, serving in many roles including pregnancy counselor, adoption worker and director.  She is certified master trainer in Infant Adoption Awareness Training.  During her tenure with Bethany, more than 650 children have been placed in adoptive homes.  Previously, Stewart’s career included with Hinds County Human Services, as well as the Mississippi Department of Human Services, on cases involving children in foster care, including those awaiting adoption. The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization focused on increasing awareness about children in need of permanent, safe, and loving homes, and on eliminating barriers to adoption. CCAI, which does not receive government funding, was established in 2001 as an outgrowth of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption.  Cochran and Senator Roger Wicker, along with Congressman Alan Nunnelee, are members of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption for the 113th Congress. In late September, Cochran became an original cosponsor of The Adoption Information Act (S.1539), which would require the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to prepare, distribute, and update annually pamphlets that list all the adoption centers in each state along with associated contact information.  Family planning organizations that receive federal funding would be required to provide HHS with their plans to issue adoption promotion literature to all their clients.
