COUNTIES 2016-08-11 2016 2016-08 Republican House MS Thad Cochran C000567 www.cochran.senate.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today announced that five Mississippi communities and two counties will receive $374,800 in rural development grant funding for public safety and public health projects.The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development has approved seven grants for Mississippi, including funding for the communities of Fayette, Lexington, Pace, Shaw, and Vaiden.  Carroll and Jefferson Davis counties are also receiving funding.“Rural development grants represent small investments that can help smaller communities provide for the public health and safety of their residents,” Cochran said.Overall investment in the seven Mississippi projects totals $669,695 when combined with nonfederal contributions.The USDA Rural Development grants approved for Mississippi to support or improve community facilities for health care, public safety and public service include: •    Town of Fayette – $244,800 to purchase a fire truck ($74,976 nonfederal funding; $299,776 total project cost) •    City of Lexington – $30,000 to fund a study deteriorating wastewater infrastructure to determine alternative operating changes or capital improvements that may be required to meet environmental regulations •    Town of Pace – $23,900 to support West Railroad Street repairs ($135,550 Mississippi Development Authority and town funding; $159,450 total project cost) •    City of Shaw – $19,500 to purchase a police vehicle ($6,500 nonfederal funding; $26,000 total project cost) •    Town of Vaiden – $21,000 to purchase a patrol vehicle ($7,100 nonfederal funding; $28,200 total project cost) •    Carroll County – $24,200 to purchase health clinic equipment for the Vaiden Health Clinic ($44,987 nonfederal funding; $69,187 total project cost) •    Jefferson Davis County – $31,000 to purchase two patrol vehicles ($25,782 nonfederal funding; $57,082 total project cost)Cochran is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and serves on the subcommittee with funding jurisdiction over the USDA and Rural Development.   He is also the senior Republican on the Senate Agriculture Committee, which is charged with recommending USDA policy.Additional awards to Mississippi could be forthcoming as the USDA continues distribution of discretionary funding before the end of FY2016 on Sept. 20. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
