The National 4-H Council approved the award to promote 4-H National Mentoring Program mentoring activities in Mississippi, which are geared toward helping at-risk youth avoid juvenile delinquency through community-based educational programs.  The funding derives from congressional appropriations for the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). “I am pleased that these resources will be put to work in Mississippi.  I appreciate the good work being done by the 4-H and the Mississippi Extension Service to create opportunities for youth in our state,” Cochran said. “The mentor programs are dedicated to improving the education and wellness of children.  The Congress has recognized that organizations like 4-H can effectively reach youth in need of positive role models and constructive activities,” he said. The grant will be used to strengthen, expand and implement 4-H youth mentoring programs developed in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Children, Youth and Families at Risk Program.  The OJJDP funding is intended to reduce juvenile delinquency, drug abuse, truancy, and other problems and high-risk behaviors. According to The Mentoring Effect: Young People’s Perspective on the Outcomes and Availability of Mentoring, 76 percent of at-risk young adults who had a mentor aspire to enroll in and graduate from college versus half of at-risk young adults who had not had a mentor. Cochran, a former 4-H member, has been supportive of mentoring programs and those who volunteer their time and efforts to reach at-risk youth.  He serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee that funds the OJJDP.
