U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today announced that a $1.47 million grant has been approved to help the City of Jackson undertake a flood control project along a stretch of Lynch Creek in West Jackson. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved the $1,477,321 grant for Jackson through its Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The storm water management award is expected to cover 75 percent of the $1,969,763 cost of the Lynch Creek drainage improvement project. The remaining 25 percent will be paid for with local funds. This grant will help the City of Jackson address persistent flooding problems along Lynch Creek. The successful completion of this work should help lessen the public safety risks and economic damages associated with flooding in the area, said Cochran, who serves on the Senate appropriations subcommittee with jurisdiction over FEMA. The FEMA grant would support Phase 2 of the project, which entails widening Lynch Creek near Ellis Avenue and Robinson Road and improving the creek slope with gabion baskets. The creek would be widened to a 50- to 70-foot flat bottom for approximately 1,000 feet from St. Charles Avenue past Robinson Road to increase flow capacity and better protect homes and businesses in the area. In 2013, the City of Jackson received a Phase 1 design grant worth $209,119 to develop the Lynch Creek project. Both grants were approved through the federal disaster designation issued for Mississippi following Hurricane Isaac in 2012. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
