Also in attendance were local first responders, veterans, and representatives of Honor Flight Maine. I was honored to join the Freeport Flag Ladies on this solemn anniversary to honor each of the 2,977 lives lost 19 years ago, said Senator Collins. The Freeport Flag Ladies' dedication and patriotism continue to inspire us all. They are among those throughout our nation who transformed one of America's darkest days into one of our finest hours. Three days after that horrific day in 2001, President Bush asked Americans to step outside their homes with lighted candles in memory of the heroes and those lost on 9/11. Living on a secluded road, Elaine, Carmen, and JoAnn instead took their candles and an American flag to Main Street in Freeport.They made a promise to stand with their flags on Main Street each and every Tuesday morning between the hours of 8 and 9, to mark the day and time of the attacks.Last year, theFreeport Flagladies retired and Wreaths Across Americahascontinued the tradition of waving flags every Tuesday along U.S. Route 1 in Jonesboro.
