Coons on the Special Counsel: “We ought to take responsible bipartisan action here to prevent what would otherwise be a constitutional crisis.” 2018-11-14 2018 2018-11 Democrat House DE Christopher Coons C001088 www.coons.senate.gov     legacy 11.14.18 [VIDEO] Sen. Coons on the Special Counsel: We ought to take responsible bipartisan action here to prevent what would otherwise be a constitutional crisis. Sen. Coons on his bipartisan legislation to protect the Special Counsel: We can take this up and pass it easily today by unanimous consent. WASHINGTON U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) today joined MSNBC's Morning Joe to discuss Special Counsel Robert Mueller and working with President Trump. Frankly, the veryday that President Trump forcedthe resignation of Jeff Sessionsas attorney general he also, again, denounced Mueller'sinvestigation as a hoax andtweeted that he could fireMueller at any time. Why that's not enough of awarning for the majority leader, for our colleagues, I don'tknow, but the statements thatMatt Whitaker the actingattorney general made on CNNwhen he was a commentator giveme grave concern.I think we ought to takeresponsible bipartisan actionhere to prevent what wouldotherwise be a constitutionalcrisis. We can take this up and pass iteasily today by unanimousconsent, said Senator Coons. Video and audio availablehere. Excerpts from the interview: Sen. Coons on the border:I've got someone on mystaff, Lieutenant Brendan Mackie, who served in this exactmission when our National Guardunit got deployed to the bordera number of years ago. When they are forward deployedat the border, it's difficultduty and in this particularinstance given as Senator Flakesaid that they are sitting 90miles from the border and giventhat active duty military troopsreally aren't needed to blocksome caravan that we have gotmonths of advanced notice of,the border guard is fullycapable of handling them, Iwould have to look them in theeye and say thank you for yourservice and I regret that ourpresident is using you as apolitical stunt. Sen. Coons on the Mueller legislation:You know, frankly, the veryday that President Trump forcedthe resignation of Jeff Sessionsas attorney general he also, again, denounced Mueller'sinvestigation as a hoax andtweeted that he could fireMueller at any time. We can take this up and pass iteasily today by unanimousconsent. Sen. Coons on working with President Trump:We can't spend our timeworrying about the nextelection, we have to focus onsolving the problems that facethe American people. What I heard up and down thestate of Delaware in recentweeks is that folks really want us towork together. One of the reasons I'm gratefulfor the service of Senator Flakeis the things we've been able towork together on overseas andhere at home.I think if we show that we arewilling to step forward and puton the table strong real billsto address infrastructure, toaddress apprenticeships and jobsin the building trades, to dealwith the cost of health care andchallenge the president to workwith us in a bipartisan way, andsolve people's real problems, that will end up having apositive effect in the nextelection, but that shouldn't bethe reason to do it.Folks in our country haveelected a Republican Senate anda Democratic House and they wantus to work together. That's what we ought to get busydoing. Sen. Coons on the Fed:Let me mention one otherthing Jeff and I have just doneon a bipartisan basis. PresidentTrump directly challenged andcriticized the chairman of theFed in the run up to theelection, we have both been toZimbabwe a number of times, that's more the sort of thingyou expect to see in a countryruled by a dictator than in afree and open society like ours. The president shouldn't beinterfering with the Fed and their decisions and wesent a joint letter to thepresident urging him to stopthat bad behavior. ### Press Contact Sean Coit at 202-224-5042 orSean_Coit@coons.senate.gov Print Email Tweet Previous Article 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
