Security Council resolution regarding Israel. He explains that a veto would be in accordance with longstanding U.S. policy and with a presidential tradition of deference to incoming presidents. "I urge President Obama to veto the U.N. Security Council draft resolution that unfairly targets and undermines Israel. The path to peace does not run through the United Nations, but through strengthening the U.S.-Israel relationship, bolstering Israel's security, and direct negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians. A U.N. Security Council resolution that predetermines a final-status issue will severely harm the prospects for a lasting peace. This is longstanding U.S. policy, and I call upon President Obama to hold fast to it, as he did when he vetoed a similar Security Council resolution in 2011."In doing so, President Obama will also be upholding a tradition of deference to an incoming president on major issues. The first President Bush consulted with then President-elect Clinton prior to sending troops to Somalia. And President George W. Bush-at President Obama's urging-provided short-term bridge loans to the U.S. auto industry to give him time to assess the crisis after his inauguration.
