Washington, D.C. - Emmett, Idaho, student Emily Fleming has been sponsored by Idaho Senator Mike Crapo to serve as a United States Senate Page for the fall semester.  As a Senate Page, Fleming will work with Senate floor staff in executing the everyday functions of the Senate chamber floor. Her appointment will run through the end of January 2017. Emily is a junior at Emmett High School where she maintains a 4.0 grade point average and is active in the Emmett community.  She recently helped organize a Rotary Interact Club for Emmett and served as the Club's founding president.  Emily, who enjoys classic literature, said she hopes to visit the Library of Congress during her time in Washington. "Serving as a Page to the Senate, Emily will have the unique opportunity to participate in the Chamber's day-to-day operations and be part of the team that keeps the Senate operating smoothly," said Crapo.  "In addition, she will have a front-row seat to debates on policy and interact with Senators from across the nation." Pages have served the Senate since 1829 and have come from all 50 states through history, with the first female pages being appointed in 1971.  According to the description of the Senate Page Program, pages meet some of the nation's "most prominent leaders and witness firsthand the political debates of the United States Senate." Pages must be juniors in high school and be at least 16 years old.  Their duties include delivering correspondence and legislative materials within the U.S. Capitol Complex, and assisting the floor staff during roll call votes and other functions.  In addition to working whenever the Senate is in session, Pages also attend school early each morning so as to maintain their academic obligations while in Washington. Crapo does not hold a permanent Senate page appointment, but occasionally has the opportunity to select a qualified Idaho student to serve a term in the program. # # # Print Email Tweet Next Article Previous Article 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
