U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly and Congressman Fred Upton (R-MI), Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee in the House of Representatives hosted a roundtable discussion at Indiana University Research & Technology Corporation today on bipartisan efforts to encourage medical innovation, help accelerate development and review of new, life-saving medicines and medical devices. Donnelly announced his Medical Innovation Agenda last month that includes a series of bipartisan bills introduced or supported by Donnelly that would streamline multiple Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approval processes to expedite the development of life-saving medicines and medical devices. The House passed Uptons 21st Century Cures Act earlier this year. Donnelly and Upton were joined by more than 15 organizations representing the life sciences industry, pharmaceutical companies, and medical device companies. Donnelly said, We are at an exciting time in medical advances, and federally-funded researchers and experts in the life sciences industries in Indiana are leading the way in groundbreaking technologies and medicine. Some of our laws and regulations, however, have not kept pace with innovation. We must continue to close the gap between the development of new drugs and devices and bringing safe and effective products to the public. That is why Congressman Upton and I have partnered together in a bipartisan effort aimed at helping ensure patients have timely access to life-saving drugs and medical devices. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to support medical innovation. Upton said, Indiana and Michigan are at the forefront of the Cures effort and as we saw today, some of the nations best academic and research minds are in our own backyard. With 21st Century Cures we are delivering hope for patients and giving researchers and regulators the tools they need to get faster cures. The life sciencesand pharmaceutical industries are not only important to Hoosiers and Americans, but vital to Indianas economy.According to areport by BioCrossroads and the Indiana Business Resource Centerat the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University (IBRC), the life sciences industry has an economic impact on Indianas economy of almost $45 billion. For each job directly added in the life sciences industry in Indiana, another 2.7 jobs are created elsewhere in the states economy. The 21stCentury Cures Act As Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Upton led a bipartisan initiative to accelerate the pace of cures and medical breakthroughs in the United States. Uptons committee took a comprehensive look at the full arc of this process from discovery to development to delivery to ensure we are taking full advantage of the advances this country has made in science and technology and use these resources to keep America as the innovation capital of the world.
