U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly today announced that, with his support, six fire departments from the La Porte County area have been awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The $841,910 award to the fire departments from Kankakee, Center, Scipio and Springfield townships, as well as from the cities of La Porte and Westville, will help the departments purchase new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) packs, as well as related equipment for the packs. With new SCBA, the equipment will be standardized across all the departments, which will improve interoperability and safety. Donnelly wrote a letter to FEMA in support of the application. Donnelly said, This Assistance to Firefighters Grant will give the brave men and women of these La Porte County-area fire departments life-saving protection during emergency situations. I'm proud to have supported this effort because we should do all we can for these Hoosiers who put their lives on the line every day to keep our families and communities safe. Andy Snyder, Chief of the La Porte Fire Department, said, We are extremely pleased to receive the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) to purchase Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA's). This is a classic example of area fire departments, career and volunteer, working together to secure critical lifesaving equipment that would not otherwise have been possible without assistance through federal funds. I would like to thank Senator Donnelly for his assistance with securing this funding and always being supportive to the fire service.
