U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly today announced that, with his support, the Richmond Fire Department has been awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The $372,980 award will help the department replace outdated, unreliable Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) packs with new SCBA and related equipment. The new SCBA packs will meet safety standards and provide firefighters with improved protection for fire and rescue calls.Donnelly wrote a letter to FEMA supporting the Richmond Department's request. Donnelly said, This Assistance to Firefighters Grant will give the brave men and women of the Richmond Fire Department life-saving protection during emergency situations. I'm proud to have supported this effort because we should do all we can for these Hoosiers who put their lives on the line every day to keep our families and communities safe. Jerry Purcell, Chief of the Richmond Fire Department, said, The importance of the support of United States Senator Joe Donnelly in our receiving this grant cannot be overstated. The grant fortuitously arrives as our department was preparing to budget this required expense for mandated breathing apparatus. This grant facilitates the Richmond Fire Departments continued momentum that is carrying this organization and its members forward into 2019 and beyond providing our citizens professional life saving services, with the equipment and training our members deserve.
