As part of the DOL’s Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Community College and Career Training Grant Program, this grant awarded to Purdue University for approximately $2.7 million will help fund the university’s existing Assisting Workforce by Advancing Knowledge for Employment (AWAKE) program. Purdue’s AWAKE program provides training for reemployment to TAA-eligible workers, veterans, and other adults for reemployment with manufacturing employers in Lake, Porter, Jasper, and Newton Counties. Donnelly said, “I hear from employers in Indiana’s manufacturing industry who have positions available but can’t find the workers who have the training demanded for the open jobs. I’m pleased the Department of Labor awarded Purdue University this grant because it will help bridge the existing skills gap and help Hoosiers find additional job opportunities in Northwest Indiana.” Thomas L. Keon, Chancellor of Purdue University Calumet said, “Our College of Technology has been working on workforce development in northwest Indiana for several years. Manufacturing partners of our university need an educated workforce with proper training at many different levels. Purdue Calumet’s College of Technology is dedicated to providing qualified graduates and training the northwest Indiana workforce in areas of sophistication that are needed in ever-evolving manufacturing technologies.” The DOL’s TAA Community College and Career Training Grant Program promotes skills development and employment opportunities in fields such as advanced manufacturing transportation, and heath care, as well as science, technology, engineering and math careers through partnerships between training providers and local employers.
