The grant comes following IndyEast being designated a federal Promise Zone, and it will provide small businesses with greater access to capital and low-interest rate loans when they hire unemployed or underemployed workers. Donnelly, who wrote a letter of support for King Park Development Corporation’s application, said, “This federal grant will help get Hoosiers back to work, help local small businesses grow, and assist a community that has struggled to see economic progress. This is the latest example of the Promise Zone designation at work, helping to combat poverty through new opportunities for hard-working residents, who are trying to make ends meet and improve life for their families.” Steven Meyer, Executive Director of King Park, said, “Thanks to the support of the Senator, King Park will be able to support new and expanding businesses that are creating employment opportunities in our neighborhoods. We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will significantly improve our capacity to lend to new neighborhoods underserved by traditional lending institutions.” Donnelly strongly supported Indianapolis’ Near Eastside neighborhood's effort to receive the federal Promise Zone designation from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2015. As a Promise Zone designee, IndyEast has dedicated federal staff on the ground to help them implement their plans, as well as five full-time AmeriCorps VISTA members to recruit and manage volunteers for the effort.
