We are a safer and stronger nation as a result of his leadership, and I congratulate him on soon receiving this highest civilian honor. Hoosiers are proud to call him one of our own." The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Executive Order signed by President John F. Kennedy establishing the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
