U.S. Senator Donnelly recently visited two National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) laboratories and a Department of Defense (DoD) military installation in New Mexico to meet with defense officials about the role that Indiana plays in helping the U.S. maintain a safe, secure, and effective nuclear deterrent. Donnelly had a chance to discuss Purdues new partnership with Sandia National Laboratories and NWSC Cranes work to support DoDs nuclear programs. Donnelly also visited Los Alamos National Laboratory and Kirtland Air Force Base. Donnelly reviewed government efforts aimed at maintaining the U.S. nuclear stockpile, protecting the U.S. against weapons of mass destruction, and preventing the spread of nuclear weapons around the world. As Ranking Member on the Senate Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Donnelly helps lead oversight efforts of Americas nuclear weapons programs. One of Donnellys top priorities has been maximizing collaboration and information sharing across the Navy, Air Force, and NNSA. NSWC Crane has been on the leading edge of efforts to enhance collaboration, sharing their world-renowned expertise with partners in the national security labs and across the military services. Earlier this year, Donnelly helped welcome Purdue and Sandias announcement about the formation of a strategic alliance. During the five-year alliance, Purdue and Sandia will work collaboratively on research; support exchange opportunities for Purdue faculty and students and Sandia staff; and support an increased faculty-research partnership. Donnelly said, Hoosiers play a large and growing role in protecting our national security, and this includes ensuring our nuclear weapons are safe, secure, and effective. As our nation confronts complex threats around the world, our nuclear security is as critical today as it has ever been. Visiting the Sandia and Los Alamos national security labs and Kirtland Air Force Base provided an important opportunity to thank our nuclear scientists, engineers, and servicemembers for their service to our country. We discussed the critical work done by Hoosiers both at NWSC Crane and through the Purdue-Sandia partnership to keep our country safe. I will continue to work to ensure the NNSA and DoD are leveraging and maximizing partnerships with NWSC Crane and Purdue and the outstanding talent in Indiana contributing to our national security.
