Late yesterday, U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly helped the Senate pass a bipartisan extension of the Export-Import (Ex-Im) Bank through September 2019. The Ex-Im Bank reauthorization was part of a five-year transportation and infrastructure funding bill that now heads to President Obamas desk to be signed into law. Donnelly has long advocated for the Ex-Im Bank because it helps level the playing field for Indiana small businesses and manufacturers, doesnt cost taxpayers a dimein fact it turns a profitand protects and create jobs across the state. The Ex-Im Bank, the official export credit agency of the United States, helps facilitate the export of American goods and services to international markets. Because Congress failed to reauthorize the Banks charter by June 30, 2015, the Bank has not been allowed to provide American businesses with any new financing, and some businesses began turning to foreign countries for financing and sending American jobs overseas. Donnelly said, Reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank is great news for businesses in our state. The Export-Import Bank helps companies to expand their export opportunities, creating jobs for Americans and Hoosiers. It doesnt get more commonsense than creating more jobs at home and boosting exports in a fiscally responsible way and the Export-Import Bank does just that. Like any compromise, this bipartisan highway bill is not the bill I would have written, but a long-term reauthorization of federal highway and transit programs is without question that best solution to address our pressing need to repair Indiana roads and bridges and make sure that our transit systems continue to run safely and efficiently. Donnelly has been pushing Congress to reauthorize the Ex-Im Bank for months. In June 2015, he delivered a speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate emphasizing the importance of the Ex-Im Bank to small businesses and job creation in Indiana. In July 2015, he helpedthe Senate pass a bipartisan amendmentthat would reform and reauthorize the Export-Import Banks charter through September 2019. The amendment was identical to thebipartisan billDonnelly helped introduce earlier this year. In October, Donnelly urged Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to allow bipartisan reauthorization of the Ex-Im Bank to get a vote in the Senate. According to the Export-Import Bank, since 2007, the Bank has directly helped approximately 140 Hoosier companies export more than $4 billion in goods and services overseas. In 2015 alone, 52 Hoosier companies, including 39 small businesses, have used the Ex-Im Bank to facilitate exporting Indiana-made products, valued at more than $286 million. The Export-Import Bank nationally approved $20.5 billion in authorizations in fiscal year 2014, which supported an estimated $27.5 billion of U.S. exports and more than 164,000 U.S. jobs.
