Donnelly said, “I am pleased that the Senate Finance Committee took action today and passed the Miners Protection Act, fulfilling its commitment to vote on this legislation. I urge the full Senate to act quickly, and I will keep pushing for passage of this bipartisan legislation, because these miners deserve the benefits they were promised and earned.” In Indiana, roughly 3,000 retired miners are receiving pension benefits and 1,500 are receiving health benefits and, without action, their benefits are at risk. Donnelly spoke in support of the Miners Protection Act on the Senate floor in June, joining a bipartisan group of Senators calling for the Senate to act. Subsequently, Donnelly and the senators received a commitment that the bill would see committee action, which occurred today.
