The paper highlights how the automotive industry, since late 2008, has invested in Hoosier communities and created jobs. Last week, Senator Donnelly visited seven auto manufacturing facilities around Indiana to recognize the hard work of Hoosiers. He visited GM plants in Fort Wayne, Marion, and Bedford, visited a Toyota plant in Princeton, a Honda plant in Greensburg, a Subaru plant in Lafayette, and a Chrysler plant in Kokomo. Donnelly said, “One thing I said five years ago when all this occurred, is I said, ‘Look – we are being asked whether or not to bet on Hoosier workers, the Hoosier work ethic, and the future of our manufacturing.’ I support that, I believe in our ability to get this done and get it done right, and it has been shown by the people of our state, by our workers, by these companies that they have done an extraordinary job in coming back and making the best-quality vehicles in the world.” In 2008, automobile sales sharply declined across the United States as a result of the Great Recession. The U.S. auto industry neared a collapse that would have been devastating to the economy, with Indiana having more to lose in a collapse than nearly any other state in the country. Both the Bush and Obama administrations realized that the collapse of the U.S. auto industry would have been devastating to the U.S. economy. President Bush, unable to persuade Congress to support a plan to assist the industry, sidestepped Congress and provided a $17.4 billion loan to General Motors and Chrysler. Five years later, Indiana’s automotive industry is back to 2008 employment levels, with nearly 102,000 Hoosiers employed in the automotive manufacturing sector.[1] Additionally, Indiana is now the second largest automotive manufacturer in the country, surpassing Ohio for the second slot.[2] ### [1] McAlinden, Sean and Menk, Debra.
