This news comes after Indiana Governor Mike Pence chose to forego applying for a federal Preschool Development Grant last year. The grant, offered by the U.S. Departments of Education and Health and Human Services, would have helped build, develop, and expand voluntary, high-quality preschool programs for low-and moderate-income Hoosier families. Indiana would have been eligible to receive up to $80 million in funding. Donnelly said, It was disappointing when the Governor decided not to apply for federal preschool development grants. We knew that there was high demand from Hoosier families for these programs, and when you leave as much as $80 million on the table, it is no surprise that so many now lack access to them. An investment in pre-K is an investment in Indianas future, and we can help increase economic opportunity for Hoosiers by making preschool a priority for our kids and giving them a chance to build a strong foundation for long-term success. As Indianas senator, I will continue to push for expanding access to early childhood education, and I am pleased that the compromise bill Congress is expected to soon consider to update the Elementary and Secondary Education Act would authorize federal preschool development grants for states to increase access, improve, and coordinate their pre-K programs. I stand ready to work with Governor Pence, educators, and other local partners to ensure more Hoosier families have access to early childhood education and the resources necessary to achieve their potential. In an October 2014 letter to Pence, Donnelly expressed disappointment and requested a more detailed explanation from the Governor on the State of Indianas decision to forego applying for a federal Preschool Development Grant.
