After the House tonight passed a long-term reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank with bipartisan support, U.S. Senator Donnelly urged the Senate to act. Donnelly sent a letter to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, saying in part, I encourage you to demonstrate leadership by ending the gridlock and allowing a stand-alone vote in the Senate on a common sense reauthorization that has the support of a bipartisan majority in both chambers, including nearly 70 members of the Senate from both sides of the aisle. Donnelly, who serves on the Senate Banking Committee, also wrote in the letter, As you know, the Ex-Im Bank helps to level the playing field for American companies, routinely returns money to the U.S. Treasury, and protects and creates jobs here at home. By allowing the charter to expire, however, we have made it harderif not impossiblefor some American manufacturers to export their products and keep Americans working. In fact, we have recently seen a growing number of American businesses reducing or shutting down their operations and shifting jobs overseas. Donnelly has continuously advocated for the reauthorization of the Ex-Im Bank. In July 2015, he helped the Senate pass a bipartisan amendment that would reform and reauthorize the Export-Import Banks charter through September 2019. The amendment was identical to the bipartisan bill Donnelly helped introduce earlier this year. Since 1992, the Export-Import Bank has returned more than $7 billion in profits to the Treasury Department, with $675 million of that coming in fiscal year 2014. The Export-Import Bank approved $20.5 billion in authorizations in fiscal year 2014 alone, which supported an estimated $27.5 billion of U.S. exports and more than 164,000 U.S. jobs. According to the Export-Import Bank, since 2007, the Bank has directly helped approximately 140 Hoosier companies export more than $4 billion in goods and services overseas. During its 80-plus year existence, the Export-Import Bank has garnered support from every President during that span and previously had been renewed consistently with bipartisan support by Congress. Despite our differences, we have demonstrated that with tough negotiations and reasonable compromise, we can work together to advance important bills on issues like early childhood education, human trafficking, and our national defense policy. Certainly, we should not sacrifice American jobs because of the uncompromising ideology of a few. I know you want to see the Senate work in a bipartisan, pragmatic manner, and I can think of no better way to demonstrate our shared commitment to strengthening our economy than by scheduling a Senate vote on the House-passed Ex-Im reauthorization bill.
