In the announcement, Donnelly was joined by Scott Stump, President and CEO of the National Desert Storm War Memorial Association; Christine Jensen, an Indianapolis resident and former President of the Indiana chapter of Gold Star Mothers, who lost her son Army Specialist Brian Simpson in Operation Desert Storm; Kent Shively, a Kokomo resident, who serves as Vice Chair of the National Desert Storm War Memorial Association; and former Mayor of Indianapolis Greg Ballard, who served as a U.S. Marine in the Gulf War. Donnelly, member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said, “I am proud to help make the Gulf War Memorial a reality. The men and women who served our nation in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Desert Shield, and those we lost, deserve to be recognized for their service and sacrifice. Bringing the Gulf War Memorial to our nation’s capital will ensure that their memories are preserved for our children and grandchildren, as well as future generations of Americans." Stump, President and CEO of the National Desert Storm War Memorial Association, said, “For years I have been working for six years to get a National Desert Storm War Memorial built in Washington, D.C. As a Gulf War veteran, I believe we must honor the service of the over 600,000 Americans who served in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Desert Shield, and pay tribute to those who gave their lives. We are so very thankful for Senator Donnelly and Senator Boozman’s leadership and bipartisan efforts to ensure this memorial is built. We are forever grateful to Senator Donnelly for his unwavering support and belief in the National Desert Storm War Memorial.” Christine Jensen, a Gold Star mother and former President of the Indiana chapter of Gold Star Mothers whose son Brian Simpson was killed in Operation Desert Storm, said, “Really, this memorial means a lot so that people don’t forget. (My son Brian) was twenty-two years old, he left behind a nineteen-year old widow…I think that is what the memorial is about, to help everyone remember what happened and how many people we lost.” In 2014, Donnelly and Senator John Boozman (R-AR) passed bipartisan legislation to authorize the Memorial as part of that year’s national defense bill, which was signed into law on December 22, 2014. Donnelly and Boozman will soon introduce bipartisan legislation allowing the Memorial to be built in Washington, D.C.
