The award will allow the Hobart Police Department to hire an additional police officer. U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly sent a letter supporting the department’s grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice earlier this year. Donnelly said, “Public safety is a top priority in Hobart. Funding from the COPS program will enable the Hobart Police Department to assign a new officer to help address the heroin epidemic and build trust and strengthen relationships within the local community. Hobart is included in a corridor that has been designated as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) by the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Hobart Police Department is collaborating with other federal and local law enforcement agencies to address drug trafficking in the region. The COPS Hiring Program is designed to advance public safety through community policing by addressing the full-time sworn officer needs of state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies nationwide. The program provides funds directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire career law enforcement officers and to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.
