The award will allow the Jeffersonville Police Department to hire two additional police officers, who will help the department improve community policing efforts in its neighborhoods. U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly sent a letter supporting the department’s application to the U.S. Department of Justice earlier this year. Donnelly said, “Recent economic developments and the completion of the Big Four Bridge in Jeffersonville have increased traffic volume and further fueled the need to implement community policing programs. While long-term strategies to prevent crime will require everyone from law enforcement to public officials, educators, and employers to work together, ensuring our law enforcement agencies have the resources needed to keep our communities safe is a critical step.” Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore said, “I appreciate Senator Donnelly’s support, as does everybody in Jeffersonville. This grant will help make for a safer, friendlier community.” Kenny Kavanaugh, Chief of Police, Jeffersonville Police Department said, “This grant will help put more police on the street to make sure our community remains safe. We appreciate Senator Donnelly for his unwavering support of our department and city.” The COPS Hiring Program is designed to advance public safety through community policing by addressing the full-time sworn officer needs of state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies nationwide. The program provides funds directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire career law enforcement officers and to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.
