U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly welcomed the announcement that the City of Indianapolis received a 2015 Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation (BCJI) Program grant of $155,522. The federal grant will help address crime in the Northwest Area of Indianapolis. Donnelly has supported continued funding for the BCJI Grant Program and included funding for this program among his appropriations priorities in 2014 and 2015. Donnelly said, I am pleased the City of Indianapolis received a Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Program federal grant award because I am deeply concerned about the violent crime and drug use in communities throughout Indiana, especially in our larger cities like Indianapolis. Any effort to address the complex issues that contribute to crime will take collaboration among many different partners. This is a great opportunity for the Northwest Area of Indianapolis. I stand ready to continue to work with the city to help address crime in our communities, and I will continue to seize opportunities to garner support at the federal level for crime prevention and reduction efforts. Tedd Grain, Deputy Director of Local Initiatives Support Corporation, said, The Byrne Criminal Justice Grant will address the public safety challenges identified in the Northwest Area Quality of Life Plan, increasing strategic coordination among residents, public safety officials, and other key stakeholders, in order to make this neighborhood an even safer place to live, work and play. Senator Donnellys support for this grant has been invaluable. Donnelly has supported the Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Program, which is a DOJ pilot program that brings together cross-sector community coalitions to identify and implement evidence-based practices to address the drivers of crime at the local level. In May 2014, Donnelly hosted a series of meetings in central Indiana to discuss violent crime and related issues. During these meetings, he heard from a diverse group of Hoosiers, including residents, community leaders, law enforcement, and government officials about the impact that crime has on their communities. Based on those conversations, it is clear that educators, community leaders, local employers, law enforcement, and elected officials must work together in order to best address the different issues that contribute to crime. Donnelly is ready to partner with these key stakeholders in a collaborative effort to make our communities safer and to help communities address the issues directly correlated to crime in their areas. Indiana currently has one other BCJI site located in the Jacobsville neighborhood in Evansville. The Evansville BCJI initiative is led by ECHO Housing Corporation in partnership with the Evansville Police, Diehl Evaluations and Consulting, the Department of Metropolitan Development, the Jacobsville Area Community Corporation, Jacobsville Neighborhood Improvement Association, and the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, among other partners. The Jacobsville BCJI site was awarded funding in 2013.
