U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly today announced that, with his support, the Fort Wayne Fire Department has been awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The $41,364 award will help the department replace a fill station, providing a reliable air supply to the department's Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) packs. Donnelly wrote a letter to FEMA supporting the Fort Wayne Fire Department's request. Donnelly said, The brave men and women of the Fort Wayne Fire Department put themselves into harm's way to keep Hoosiers safe every day. I'm proud to have supported this effort because we must ensure our first responders have access to the highest-quality protective equipment for emergency situations. Eric Lahey, Chief of the Fort Wayne Fire Department, said, "Senator Donnelly has always been a supporter of the firefighters, he was instrumental with the Fort Wayne Fire Department receiving the 2018 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG). The grant funds will be used to purchase a new air bottle fill station. This new air bottle fill station will ensure that our firefighters continue to have clean breathing air, and will help to decrease firefighter cancer and asbestosis rates."
