In case you missed it, here are some of the highlights of their findings: The shutdown resulted in an estimated 120,000 fewer private-sector jobs created. The economy lost $2-$6 billion in economic output. The SBA was unable to process around 700 applications for small business loans. The Bureau of Land Management was unable to process about 200 applications for permits to drill on federal lands. Social Security cards were not issued. On a typical day, approximately 60,000 Americans apply for Social Security cards, which they may need to be able to start a job, take out a loan, open a bank account, or conduct other financial transactions. During the shutdown, SSA could not issue new Social Security cards. The E-Verify system was closed, so employers were also unable to check prospective employees’ immigration status. The shutdown cost $500 million in lost visitor spending across the country, according to the National Park Service. During the shutdown, Senator Joe Donnelly spoke on the floor of the U.S. Senate, citing some in Congress as the biggest obstacle to future job creation and outlining how Congress’ dysfunction is hurting the U.S. and Indiana economies. Donnelly said, “At a time when Hoosiers are trying to get back to work and take care of our families, Congress’ inability to work together is making it so much more difficult. Congress is not helping and is actually hindering job creation and economic growth.” Watch his full remarks here. Following the shutdown, Donnelly told the Indiana media, ““I have for the past few weeks been a part of a group of now 14 senators…6 Democrats, 1 Independent, and 7 Republicans who have met several times over the past couple of weeks to putting together a bipartisan framework to get the government operating and ensure we continue to pay our bills. This is about the jobs in Indiana, making sure we don’t have any interruptions in creating more jobs, about our families making ends meet. It’s about our economy.
