U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly today announced that, with his support, the Indianapolis Fire Department has been awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The $1,949,771 award will help the department replace outdated and unreliable Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) packs. The new SCBA packs will meet safety standards and provide firefighters with improved protection for fire and rescue calls. Donnelly wrote a letter to FEMA supporting the Indianapolis Fire Department's request. Donnelly said, Every day, the brave men and women of the Indianapolis Fire Department risk their lives to keep hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers safe. With this grant, they will have the upgraded equipment they need to respond safely and effectively during emergency situations. I'm proud to have supported this effort because our first responders deserve all the support we can provide. Ernest V. Malone, Chief of the Indianapolis Fire Department, said, The Indianapolis Fire Department is extremely grateful to have been awarded federal funding from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. When our firefighters respond to incidents with the most reliable respiratory protection available, they will have an increased ability to help the community we serve. New SCBAs will increase IFD's ability to save lives and property with better communication, safety and accountability features integrated within the pack. Thank you to Senator Donnelly for his support and assistance in receiving the funding necessary to implement our air management project which is vital to firefighter health and safety while at the same time becoming fully compliant with the new SCBA National Fire Protection Association and NIOSH requirements.
