| https://www.enzi.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/video?ContentRecord_id=8f5442ef-cfd9-41e2-b325-8ea5f976d9c7 | October 11: Enzi responds to constituent concerns about funding the government, closure of national parks, debt ceiling | 2013-10-11 | 2013 | 2013-10 | Republican | House | WY | Michael Enzi | E000285 | www.enzi.senate.gov | legacy | Washington, D.C. – With the federal government partially shut down for the first time in 17 years, U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., sat down to address questions and comments Wyoming constituents posted for him on Facebook and Twitter concerning funding the federal government (0:20), the closure of national parks (1:53), and the debt ceiling (3:50) in a new video. Funding the government (0:20) “This shutdown that we’re going through is 100 percent preventable. There isn’t a single vote that is supposed to solve the whole thing. The way it’s supposed to work is we’re supposed to pass each of the spending bills and there are 12 of them required every year before October 1. If we bring them to the floor and have an open amendment process, they’ll pass. Harry Reid chose not to let us have any amendments on the one he brought up and he only brought up one. Then he expected us to go ahead and pass it even though we had no input on it. That’s not how the system is supposed to work. “We need to stop dealing making and start legislating. Then we wouldn’t have these partial shutdowns or total shutdowns of some agencies. I’d like to have a chance to vote on those funding bills… Then we don’t need a continuing resolution to keep government going.” Closure of national parks (1:53) Enzi said the House has sent over bills to fund the parks and other functions of government, but the Senate majority refuses to even get together to talk about those options. "We have to be judicious in what we’re doing. We have to take a look at it and not keep spending money,” said Enzi, who offered a request Wednesday in the Senate to fund the parks only to have it rejected by the majority. Debt ceiling (3:50) “All the times that the debt ceiling has been raised, there has been something that puts us at least on a partial path to cutting back spending. The president said he isn’t going to negotiate pretty flat out. “The Wyoming people understand that you can’t keep spending more money than you take in. The Wyoming people know this is unsustainable. It’s not a problem of income, it’s a problem of outgo. We are spending more money than we take in. “The (Senate majority) leadership is saying ‘No, it has to be our way or no way,’ and they just want another year to try and solve the problem before we’ll talk about it and another $1 trillion in debt. The Wyoming people I know won’t stand for that and I won’t either.” Senator Enzi records “Collecting Common Sense from Wyoming for Washington” videos every other week when the Senate is in session. He encourages Wyoming residents to continue sharing their thoughts, ideas and questions. For individual responses, constituents should email him through his web page – www.enzi.senate.gov.
