WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), chairman of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, today convened a hearing entitled: “Assessing the Security of Our Critical Transportation Infrastructure.” The hearing examined security vulnerabilities in the U.S. transportation system and efforts to address terrorism threats to surface transportation infrastructure. Senator Fischer released the following statement after today’s hearing concluded: “Over the past year we have seen an increasing threat of terrorism to surface transportation networks both here at home and abroad. From the bomb in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood to the horrific attacks in Nice, France, and Brussels, Belgium, it’s been confirmed that our infrastructure and mass transit systems are at risk of attack. I appreciated the feedback from federal and local officials and leading experts today about the best ways to strengthen the nation’s transportation security.” The witnesses at today’s hearing included: -The Honorable John Roth, Inspector General, U.S. Department of Homeland Security -Chief Neil Trugman, Interim Chief of Police, Amtrak -Mr. Chris Spear, President and CEO, American Trucking Association -Mr. Tony Straquadine, Manager of Commercial and Government Affairs, Alliance Pipeline; Representative, Interstate Natural Gas Association of America -Mr. Tom Belfiore, Chief Security Officer, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Earlier this year, Senator Fischer joined Commerce Committee Chairman John Thune (R-S.D.), Ranking Member Bill Nelson (D-Fla), and Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) to introduce the Surface Transportation and Maritime Security Act (S. 3379). The bill would address security vulnerabilities at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) by requiring the TSA to re-evaluate its mission and determine how it budgets for and assesses risks to surface transportation. It would add as many as 70 new canine teams to make transit hubs safer and reform port security by requiring the TSA to improve the screening process for workers accessing our ports. Finally, the bill authorizes access to computerized vetting tools and programs for passenger railroads, like those for commercial airlines.
