WASHINGTON U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) today participated in a Senate Commerce Subcommittee hearing on advancing the Internet of Things in rural America. The President and CEO of Lindsay Corporation in Omaha, Timothy Hassinger, testified during the hearing at Senator Fischers invitation. Fischer is a member of the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet, which convened todays hearing. There are a lot of exciting innovative opportunities out there, especially when it comes to agriculture. Internet of Things (IoT) device connections can help producers maximize crop yields, improve water and energy conservation, and enhance the food supply chain system. But to harness the power of the data from these amazing connected technologies, our producers need robust broadband connectivity. I was glad to explore some of the barriers to deploying broadband in rural America today and hear about the success of a Nebraska business. Im thankful to Tim Hassinger for his insightful testimony about the technological needs of agriculture producers in this country. Senator Fischer has been a leader on IoT in the Senate. In January 2017, she introduced the Developing and Growing the Internet of Things (DIGIT) Act with Senators Booker (D-N.J.), Gardner (R-Colo.), and Schatz (D-Hawaii). This bill would facilitate a working group of federal agencies and private sector stakeholders that would provide recommendations to Congress about how to plan for, and encourage the Internet of Things.
