U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, released the following statement after the passage of a temporary extension of spending authority for programs funded through the Highway Trust Fund (HTF): I am disappointed yet another short-term extension was needed today. However, I am encouraged by the progress that has been made in the House on a long-term funding highway measure. Importantly, the short-term extension approved today also provides needed time to implement new rail safety technology known as Positive Train Control. Nebraskans want a long-term transportation bill that provides certainty, advances highway project construction, and enhances road safety. Once the House passes their bill, I am confident we can come together and craft a bipartisan, multi-year transportation bill. The safety and reliability of our nations transportation system depends on it. This afternoon, the U.S. Senate passed a temporary extension of spending authority for programs funded through the HTF. This extension will last until November 20, and is merely an authorizing patch to allow programs to continue receiving funding. No new funding is attached to this extension. Senator Fischer has been a proponent for increasing infrastructure investment and facilitating the initiation of highway projects since her time in the Nebraska Unicameral. As an active proponent of a long-term highway funding bill, Fischer joined her colleagues to craft the Senate version that passed in July. In her capacity as chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, and as an active member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, Fischer worked to include many key provisions in the Senate bill. Specifically, this legislation reforms the regulatory process, enhances project flexibility for states, and streamlines the environmental review process. The highway bills provisions were drafted in consultation with transportation stakeholders in Nebraska, including officials from the Nebraska Department of Roads. Last week, the House passed their version of the highway bill out of committee. Once the bill passes the full House of Representatives, a conference committee will be appointed to iron out the differences between the House and Senate versions. Both chambers will then vote on the final bill, which will be sent to the president to be signed into law.
