Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today applauded the passage of S. 756, the First Step Act, which passed the Senate by a vote of 87- 12. This bipartisan criminal justice reform is endorsed by President Trump and cosponsored by more than a third of the Senate. The First Step Act aims to reduce federal recidivism and crime, prepares inmates for successful transition to society, enhances prison security and officer safety, and reforms federal criminal sentencing. Flake was an original supporter of the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2015 and has worked alongside his colleagues in this effort to push comprehensive criminal justice reform: Tonight's passage of the First Step Act marks a bipartisan victory for all of us who have worked for criminal justice reform. This bill aims to reduce recidivism, enhances prison and officer security, and makes much needed reforms to our federal criminal sentencing process. I urge the House to take swift action and send this legislation to the president's desk. To see a complete list of original cosponsors and supporters, clickhere.
