Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) today made the following statement regarding the draft agreements for the Upper Basin and Lower Basin Drought Contingency Plans released by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR): The draft agreements for the Upper Basin and Lower Basin Drought Contingency Plans released by the USBR today mark an important accomplishment by state and federal partners. Projections show water levels in Lake Mead will drop below 1,075-feet by 2020, which will trigger initial reductions in Colorado River water delivered to Arizona under existing federal guidelines. The draft agreements propose a voluntary framework for conserving water in Lake Mead with the goal of preventing draconian shortages at elevations below 1,025-feet. By working together, Basin States can maintain control over their respective water futures rather than risk compulsory cutbacks handed down from Washington. This commitment to work with other Basin States will require all Arizona stakeholders to agree on the policies under which Arizona will meet its overall obligations. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
