This legislation expands the Veterans' Oral History Project at the Library of Congress to include the collection of recorded biographical histories of parents, spouses, siblings, and children of military service members who are missing in action or were killed in action.  ROUNDUP REPORT   Maricopa County- Sen. Flake met with members of NFIB (National Federation of Independent Business) to discuss issues impacting small businesses in Arizona, including the Department of Labor’s overtime rule and the rising costs of Obamacare. He also toured Grand Canyon University and spoke about the importance of manufacturing in Arizona at an Arizona manufacturing summit hosted by the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Arizona Manufacturers Council. Coconino County- Sen. Flake started his visit in Northern Arizona by meeting with members of the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, followed by a briefing with Mayor Jerry Nabours and Councilman Jeff Oravits on the construction of the future Flagstaff Veteran’s home. Sen. Flake toured the area where the home will be constructed. Sen. Flake also met with Northern Arizona University President Rita Cheng and toured the campus. Sen. Flake then spoke to county supervisors from across the state at the County Supervisors Association Annual Summit. See photos from the visit here. Pima County- While in Southern Arizona, Sen. Flake toured downtown Tucson to see first-hand the latest developments in the area. The Tucson Hispanic Chamber hosted Sen. Flake at an event with its members. Then Sen. Flake joined Gov. Doug Ducey at a ceremony welcoming Caterpillar's new regional headquarters to Tucson. The day ended back in downtown Tucson where Sen. Flake spoke at the TENWEST Festival. See photos from the visit here. Obamacare Failures- Sen. Flake joined KFYI’s Mike Broomhead to discuss the staggering county-by-county costs of Obamacare and how they compare to the costs of a monthly mortgage. View a chart of the comparisons and listen to the interview here. Key Takeaway: “Sen. Jeff Flake sent us a chart on the increased costs of The Affordable Care Act and the numbers are staggering. In Maricopa country the silver metal plan for a family of 4 with 2 adults over the age of 40 increases by $733 per month…and that doesn’t even include the deductible.” Curbing ADA Lawsuit Abuse- The NFIB expressed support for Sen. Flake’s ADA Education and Reform Act. The bill would put an end to the threat of frivolous lawsuits brought by those seeking to abuse the Americans Disabilities Act by extorting cash settlements from small businesses. Read the full story here. Key Takeaway: “Our associations and its members strongly support the intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which is to prohibit discrimination and ensure all Americans have equal access and opportunities,” said the association’s letter to Senator Flake. “Business and property owners are committed to creating a safe, welcoming environment for everyone and acknowledge the significant impact the ADA has made in achieving that goal. However, we believe legislation is needed to ensure that resources are focused on improving access and compliance while protecting business from abusive lawsuits. Unfortunately, there is a ‘cottage industry’ made up of attorneys and plaintiffs who file lawsuits based on trivial violations that abuse the ADA.” Fixing the National Debt- 3TV’s Good Morning Arizona reports that Sen. Flake took a Tempe high school student’s message on out-of-control government spending and the need to fix the national debt to the Senate floor. View the segment here. View Sen. Flake’s speech on the Senate floor here. Key Takeaway: “Our total debt is about $20 trillion. At some point, the financial markets are simply going to say, ‘you are no longer a good bet,’ and at least will require increased interest rates to pay on that debt. That is going to consume most of our budget at the federal level, just paying interest on the national debt. It is something we have to get hold of and Alexis’s generation understands that and appreciates it perhaps better than we do,” said Sen. Flake. Veterans Day- Sen. Flake joined Discover Financial Services to celebrate Veterans Day and discuss how communities can work together to serve our veterans and their families. Sen. Flake also highlighted legislation he introduced and that was signed into law to help put veterans to work as Customs and Border Protect officers at understaffed U.S. ports of entry. Key Takeaway: “It is these sacrifices that I am so grateful to Discover for recognizing and for their efforts to make easier on these families who have given so much. I have supported efforts by the Department of Veterans Affairs to work with local and national veterans organizations and employers to help returning veterans and service members reenter the civilian workforce. One of my key priorities in the Senate has been to have the federal government follow the example set by Discover and other veteran-oriented companies in harnessing the talents of our veterans and their families. One of my proudest moments this past Congress was to see my Border Jobs for Veterans Act passed and signed into law,” said Sen. Flake. Wildlife trafficking update- The White House signed into law the END Wildlife Trafficking Act, a bipartisan bill Sen. Flake introduced with Sen. Coons to combat the rapidly growing crisis of wildlife trafficking. Korean War Memorial- Sen. Flake was a cosponsor of a bill that was signed by the president that would add a Wall of Remembrance to the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.  Read more about the memorial here. Local Roots- The Mohave Daily News reports on how one of Sen. Flake’s Phoenix staff members and Tri-state native got her start in politics. Read the full story here.   Key Takeaway: “I think he is doing great things for the state. He took over Sen. (Jon) Kyl’s seat and Sen. Kyl was kind of a premier guy on water issues and Sen. Flake knew that was going to be a huge loss and so he made it his mission to make sure that water rights and energy issues and forestry issues are some of the priorities for him because those are very important issues to Arizona,” Lett said. Back to School- While in Arizona, Sen. Flake visited several schools including Westwood High School, Mountain View High School, and Hermosa Vista Elementary School.  UPCOMING OFFICE HOURS In order to make his staff more available to citizens of Arizona, Sen. Flake will send a member of his staff to hold office hours at various locations throughout the state to help residents with any problems they may be having with federal agencies, or to get messages to the senator. Office hours serve as an opportunity for residents having problems with Social Security, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services or other federal agencies to seek assistance.
