The tradition began in 1955, when a misprinted Sears advertisement inadvertently instructed children to call Santa at the phone number of NORAD's predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD), in Colorado Springs. CONAD's Director of Operations, Colonel Harry Shoup, instructed his staff to check radar for Santa's movements down from the North Pole and relay the information to the children calling in. Since that first year, NORAD staff and friends have volunteered their time every Christmas to respond to phone calls from children around the world asking about Santa's whereabouts at Christmastime. NORAD's Santa-tracking has brought 60 years of joy to thousands of children worldwide on Christmas Eve. From their headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base, NORAD staff and friends volunteer their time to help kids keep track of Santa's movement around the globe. The Santa tracker also brings important attention to the dedicated service of the men and women of NORAD, who work so hard to keep us safe every day of the year. I'm grateful for their service, and for all those who this year are dedicating part of their holiday to brightening someone else's. I look forward to hearing updates on Santa's whereabouts from my own kids after they call into the hotline, and I hope that all Coloradans keep the men and women who serve this country in uniform in their prayers this Christmas season.
