While not perfect, this act makes progresstowards getting Congress out of the classroom, rolling backCommon Core, and returning more power tothestates and local communities where it belongs. I'm especially pleasedthat this legislation includesseveral amendmentsIauthored and co-sponsored which will make meaningful changes to federal policy, helping talented high schoolers earn college credit before graduation, giving charter schools a seat at the table in educational development planning, and promoting more transparency and better access to education data for lawmakers and researchers looking to improve the system.Also included is an amendment I co-sponsored protecting children from the practice of 'passing the trash', where problem employees, including sex offenders, are transferred from school to school without proper background checks being conducted. Along with last week's long-term Highway Bill, the passage of this major bipartisan education legislation is a sign that, after years of dysfunction, the Senate is starting to work again. We've made progress on education, transportation, energy policy, entitlement reform and more. While we still have much work to do, I'm excited to be a part of a Senate that is starting, once again, to do the real work we were sent here to do.
