Chuck Grassley of Iowa said today that he will have a new Chief of Staff in the new year as longtime aide Jill Kozeny departs and a member of his current Judiciary Committee staff steps into the role. Aaron Cummings will begin the position on January 2. Others on Grassley's senior staff leadership team in Washington remain in place heading into the new year, including Penne Barton, Administrative Director; Jennifer Heins, Director of Scheduling; James Rice, Legislative Director; and Michael Zona, Communications Director. Carol Olson, based in Des Moines, serves as State Director. Cummings has been serving as Chief Constitution Counsel and Crime Counsel on the Chairman's Judiciary Committee staff. In addition to his legal background and management experience in public policy, litigation, investigations, and law and regulatory compliance, Cummings is a seasoned communicator who has worked on high-level initiatives with senior officials in all three branches of the federal government, including in the speechwriting department of President George W. Bush. Kozeny first joined Sen. Grassley's staff in 1989 as Assistant Press Secretary and served for many years as Communications Director before being tapped as his Chief of Staff in 2013. Kozeny served in this role on his personal office staff during Grassley's historic chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee and his continued, effective advocacy for rural America, renewable sources of energy, tax fairness and government accountability. During Kozeny's tenure as Chief of Staff, Grassley was re-elected to a seventh term in the United States Senate. Grassley's personal office staff is comprised of 25 employees in Washington handling legislative, administrative, and communications responsibilities. It also includes 15 employees in six offices in Iowa handling primarily constituent liaison and services responsibilities. In January, Grassley will move from chairing the Judiciary Committee to again chairing the Finance Committee, having led this tax, trade and health care policy panel as both Chairman and Ranking Member from 2001 through 2010. At the start of the 116th Congress on January 3, 2019, Grassley also will become third in line to the presidency when the U.S. Senate approves his new leadership role as the Senate President pro tempore.
