Senator Hassan also helped to secure $1 billion in emergency funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in the bill, in order to help bring down energy costs for Granite Staters. “I am pleased that we came together today on a bipartisan basis to prevent a government shutdown. The Union Leader recently covered Senator Hassan’s work behind the scenes to secure LIHEAP funding, noting “Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., had been negotiating with senators of both political parties from the hardest-hit states affected by soaring prices of natural gas linked to the war in Ukraine.” Senator Hassan is working across the aisle to bring down energy costs for Granite Staters. During negotiations for the bill that passed today, Senator Hassan worked closely with Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress to build bipartisan support for LIHEAP funding. Earlier this month, Senator Hassan led the New England delegation in calling on President Biden to lower energy costs by releasing oil from the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve.
