U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp announced two federal grants totaling over $20 million in federal funding that will continue to support the new Basin International Airport in Williston and the Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport in Dickinson. Investing in airports throughout North Dakota keeps our rural communities strong and supports economic development throughout the state, said Heitkamp. I have been working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to make sure the new Williston Airport receives the federal investments it needs to complete construction, and to support airports like Dickinson. These federal funds will help continue construction at the new Williston Airport and extend the runway in Dickinson. These federal funds are dispersed as follows: Williston: $10,758,110 in federal funding for continued support for airport construction. Dickinson: $9,870,000 in federal funding for efforts to extend the runway. The new Williston Airport has been a key transportation priority for Heitkamp. She has been advocating for the construction of the new airport in Williston that will meet the demands of the expanding region. In July, Heitkamp as part of her bipartisan efforts announced that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will maintain Williston Basin International Airport's international airport designation. In October 2016, Heitkamp attended the ground breaking ceremony for the new airport where she reinforced the need for continued and strong support for western North Dakota as it continues to grow. The ground breaking ceremony came after years of work. In April 2014, Heitkamp brought in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Michael Huerta to western North Dakota to see firsthand the impact the energy boom has had on the state's transportation infrastructure. Following up on this visit, Heitkamp urged him to approve the construction of a new airport for Williston and advocated for the funding to move forward on construction. In addition to the funding announced this year alone, other federal investments have been made for the city of Williston. The most recent announcement of federal funding for the Williston Airport came in July when Heitkamp announced $13.1 million in federal funding. In September 2015 the FAA invested $27 million in federal funding to support the relocation of Williston's airport, and in September 2016 the FAA invested an additional $26 million for the construction of the new airport. In August and September 2017, Heitkamp announced grants of $19.2 million and $21.3 million in federal funding to support construction of this new airport serving the Williston area. Heitkamp has been a staunch supporter of the Essential Air Service (EAS) program that helps connect rural and remote areas to major hubs, helping small businesses and creating jobs in rural areas. Airports, like Dickinson, benefit from important federal funding through the EAS. This federal funding comes through the U.S. Department of Transportation. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
