U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp announced one federal grant of $200,000 for the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Coops and a federal loan of $1,253,000 for New Salem that will help to support initiatives in rural communities. Every morning, I come to work in the U.S. Senate fighting for rural communities, said Heitkamp. When communities have the resources to invest in their infrastructure they can make sure their neighborhoods stay strong and safe. That is what these federal dollars will do when they support the ND Association of Rural Electric Coops effort to make investments in rural services and help the city of New Salem repair streets as part of their work to improve water and sewer. These federal funds are distributed as follows: ND Association of Rural Electric Coops: $200,000 in federal grant funding to support services in rural communities such as finding opportunities to develop rural home care in partnership with the University of North Dakota Center for Rural Health, working with a meat processing facility near Pettibone, supporting other food initiatives, and supporting training for newly formed coops. These federal funds are made available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development's Rural Cooperative Development Grant program. New Salem: $1,253,000 federal loan to replace asphalt streets in New Salem as part of water and sewer infrastructure replacement. These federal funds are made available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development's Community Facilities Direct Loan program. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
