U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp announced $999,519 in federal funds for the University of North Dakota to support scholarships for lower-income, first generation, and unrepresented students so they can pursue an education in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Encouraging students to enter STEM education programs and supporting them throughout their college years will help increase the number of students ready to tackle the jobs of the 21st century, said Heitkamp. These federal funds will support lower income and minority students, including underrepresented students from rural areas, enabling them to pursue and further their careers in STEM. These federal funds are made available through the National Science Foundations Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program and the Undergraduate Scholarships with Mathematics and Science Training, Exploration and Research project. These funds will support at least 36 scholarships over a five year period for students in need of financial assistance as well as to support under represented students to increase diversity in these fields.
