U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today congratulated the City of Fargo on winning a two-year national competition to promote energy efficiency in small- to medium-size cities. Today, the Georgetown University Energy Prize competition announced that Fargos energy efficiency initiative, eFargo, has been selected as the winner of the competitions $5 million prize. The 50 U.S. communities competing for the prize were judged based on reductions in energy use and sustainability over a two-year period, creativity, and quality of community outreach and replicability. An important piece of our nations all-of-the-above energy strategy should be implementing local and state-wide energy-saving initiatives that fit our unique weather challenges and helping residents understand the tangible benefits of reduced and efficient energy use, said Heitkamp. Fargos success shows that even under extreme North Dakota weather conditions, we can promote long-term sustainability while also lowering energy bills. Todays announcement is the culmination of two years of collaboration and innovation from many dedicated folks in the Fargo community. Congratulations to the City of Fargo and the leaders of the eFargo initiative on winning this prestigious award through truly innovative ideas and community-wide participation achieving greater energy efficiency that I hope will lead to long-term planning goals for the Fargo metropolitan region. As part of its initiative, the City of Fargo has brought together government officials, residents, and utility companies to significantly improve energy efficiency in the Fargo community, as well as increase renewable energy use. Among other things, the city has been working to incorporate biodiesel buses into its bus system, replace traffic lights to LED, and provide energy conservation tips to local residents. Heitkamp has been in contact with the eFargo project leaders throughout the competition in 2014, Heitkamp sent a letter of support on behalf of the initiative that was included in Fargos initial application. And in 2015, Heitkamp congratulated Fargo on becoming a semi-finalist in the Energy Prize competition. "Ultimately it was people power, designing and implementing cost-effective and creative solutions, and building partnerships that pulled together the community into an active role and empowered them to achieve the energy use reductions in their homes and schools, said eFargo Project Manager Malini Srivastava. Winning the Georgetown Prize gives us cause to celebrate but also the responsibility of national leadership. We want to thank Senator Heitkamp for her assistance during this process, and we look forward to working with her as we continue to build cost-effective, creative, and nimble solutions. We hope to inspire and be a resource for other cities and towns to achieve their own energy-efficiency goals. As winner of the competition, the City of Fargo will receive assistance from leading experts to finance new sustainable energy projects in the community.
