U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced more than $6 million in federal funding to make flood protection improvements in Cass County and Fargo. During the flood of 2011, every river basin in North Dakota was impacted by the unprecedented levels of water. Fargo experienced 150 days above flood stage and Cass County incurred $1.9 million in emergency work costs. These funds, authorized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will assist with the acquisition and demolition of 38 flood-prone properties in Cass County. Home buyouts in flood prone areas are a part of the regions comprehensive plan for long term flood protection. The funds will also be used to improve the sanitary sewer system in Fargo to minimize the risk of sewer backup into public and private property during wet weather conditions. So many North Dakotans have experienced the heart ache of losing their homes or rebuilding their communities because of flooding, said Heitkamp. The City of Fargo and Cass County have been working diligently to invest in projects that will mitigate the flood risk in the region. These new federal funds will assist them in fulfilling their prevention plans following the 2011 flood. In the Senate, Ive fought to boost flood protection across North Dakota, including in Fargo, to protect our families and communities, and these funds are another important step toward building a comprehensive flood risk management effort in the region. In May 2014, the President signed into law the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) which includes Heitkamp-backed provisions to authorize permanent flood protection in the Fargo-Moorhead region and block the Federal government from charging a fee for surplus water from the reservoirs along the Missouri River, including Lake Sakakawea and Lake Oahe. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
