During a speech to the North Dakota Bankers Association Annual Ag Credit Conference, U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp highlighted the important role community banks play in supporting our states farmers and ranchers. As a member of the Senate Committee on Banking and the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Heitkamp has been a strong advocate for farmers and ranchers, from being actively involved in crafting the 2014 Farm Bill to opening the door to new markets for our states agricultural products. Starting with her first year in office, Heitkamp has taken a commonsense approach providing needed regulatory relief for community banks and credits unions that play a crucial role in making sure rural communities have access to lending. The states financial industry understands the needs of farmers and ranchers and Heitkamp believes we must have a regulatory framework to help them meet their goals. North Dakota has experienced over a decade of solid growth for our agriculture industry as farmers and ranchers have lifted up our state, said Heitkamp. We must make sure we continue to promote and provide the opportunities for our agriculture producers to thrive now and into the future. For most of North Dakotas history, farmers and ranchers had to work hand in hand with their local bankers to help finance supplies and equipment and to make sure the finished product got to market. Today is no different, as we now need to make sure overburdensome regulations dont hold back our communities from investing in agriculture and continuing to open up new markets for our goods. The 2015 North Dakota Bankers Association holds its annual Agricultural Credit Conference each fall in Bismarck. This conference provides an opportunity for bankers to gain information and to build relationships in the agricultural industry. Heitkamp has long been a vocal advocate for North Dakotas farmers and ranchers. She helped write, negotiate, and pass the 2014 Farm Bill to stand up for the states agriculture community. In April, she helped introduce bipartisan legislation with Senators Joe Donnelly (D-IN), James Inhofe (R-OK), and John Barrasso (R-WY) which she had been working on for months -- to send the Environmental Protection Agencys (EPA) overly broad Waters of the U.S. rule back to the agency. Her bill would require the EPA to revise the rule by taking into consideration the concerns of farmers, ranchers, and small business owners who have faced serious confusion as a result of unclear and sweeping regulations in the rule that could impact the way they are allowed to use their land. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
