That compassion and ability to look at matters from all perspectives made him an invaluable defender of equal rights and a proponent of tolerance – improving lives in Native American communities and bringing kindness to any job he did or decision he made. His calls to address sentencing disparities for Indian Country were among Judge Bright’s most important work, including his fifty-plus page dissent in U.S. v. Deegan, a seminal treatise on how our laws treat Native Americans unfairly and without consideration of historical and continued trauma. For years I felt lucky to call him a friend, and know his loss will be felt by many.
