U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today issued the following statement after she voted in favor of emergency aid for the Ukrainian government. The bipartisan measure unanimously passed in the Senate by voice vote. The legislation would provide loan guarantees and direct aid for Ukraine, and authorizes sanctions against Ukrainians and Russians involved in the takeover of the Crimea. The Senate came together in a bipartisan fashion today to support our friend and ally Ukraine with an emergency aid package. North Dakotans have deep connections to the Ukrainian people, and we stand with them as they work to rebuild their economy, hold new elections, and chart their own path forward. I am deeply troubled by Russias decision to intervene. If Russia continues down this aggressive path and chooses not to respect international law, then there should be consequences, such as the type of sanctions included in this bill. Heitkamp heard from many North Dakotans urging her to back efforts to support the Ukrainian government. There are deep ties between North Dakota and the people of Ukraine, whose ancestors settled in the state more than 100 years ago. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
