U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced that she nominated three outstanding students from North Dakota for admission to the nations military service academies. Heitkamp nominated Jessica Brodeur and Justin Kovich from Minot, and Barrett Sogard from Williston. North Dakota is home to some of the best, and brightest students and these three are the cream of the crop, said Heitkamp. Jessica, Justin and Barrett have the determination, work ethic and ambition that will help them succeed at our nations military service academies, and Im honored to nominate them. Members of Congress are able to nominate students to attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York; the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York; and the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Below are more details about the students Heitkamp nominated: Jessica Brodeur, originally from Minot - Nominated to the United States Air Force Academy Brodeur is currently a senior in Mechanicsburg, PA. Her father is active duty in the Air Force and has helped her understand and adjust to military life through nine moves and three different high schools. She is outgoing and motivated, a varsity athlete, top scholar and has participated in a student leadership program at West Point. In addition, Brodeur has spent her free time volunteering, including during the summer of 2012 when she worked to rebuild flood damaged homes in Minot. Justin Kovich from Minot - Nominated to the United States Air Force Academy Kovich lives on the Minot Air Force Base with his family, and has a multi-generational family legacy with the Air Force. As a member of the National Honor Society and varsity athlete in soccer and swimming, Kovich excels in both academics and athletics, and is eager to embrace the lifestyle and responsibility of a military career. Barrett Sogard, originally from Williston - Nominated to the United States Naval Academy Sogard is a Williston native who was recruited to play competitive hockey at The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut. In addition to high-level competitive sports and academics, Sogard has also been involved in a wide variety of activities, including JROTC, student government, orchestra, and volunteers at Habitat for Humanity and local homeless shelters.
