U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced a North Dakota high school student from Bismarck has been selected to be a U.S. Senate page in the upcoming Congress. Heitkamp selected Sedalia Mahlum to join the U.S. Senate page program, in recognition of her academic excellence and leadership in her school and community. Mahlum is currently a junior at Century High School in Bismarck, and will participate in the page program this coming semester from January to early June 2015. Participating in the U.S. Senate page program provides incredible opportunities for some of our nations brightest and strongest leaders, said Heitkamp. Its a privilege to sponsor and appoint Sedalia as a U.S. Senate page, and I know her hard work and passion in the classroom will be a driving force as she continues her educational experience in Washington this semester. Im proud of her commitment to North Dakota and this country, and honored to have sponsored her for the program. And I look forward to seeing her in the halls of the Senate in the coming months. Hopefully more high school students from across our state will consider applying to this unique and distinguished program in the future. I thank Senator Heitkamp for appointing me to the Senate page program this upcoming semester, said Mahlum. Im excited to learn firsthand about the U.S. government and how Congress works in Washington, D.C., and I look forward to all the great experiences Ill have with fellow leaders from around the country thanks to this wonderful opportunity. In July, Heitkamp met with Mahlum and the Young Democrats of America to discuss several issues, including student loan debt and voting rights. During their time in the program, pages complete a semester of high school in Washington, D.C. while also working in the U.S. Senate. Pages attend morning classes beginning at 6:15 a.m. at the United States Senate Page School before the Senate session begins for the day where they get a firsthand look at how the Senate works every day. Senate pages help deliver documents between Senators offices, the two chambers of Congress, committees, and the Library of Congress. Pages also help prepare the Senate chamber for each days business and assist in the Senate chamber and its cloakrooms. The Senate page program consists of 30 students each page session, 16 serving the majority party and 14 serving the minority party. Notable alumni of the program which was created by Senator Daniel Webster in 1829 include current U.S. Senators Mark Pryor (D-AR), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Roger Wicker (R-MS), and former U.S. Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT). Senate pages must be juniors in high school, 16 or 17 years old, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
