https://www.heitkamp.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=621C7B72-712D-4FCE-82F2-41A2D5D3BE5C Heitkamp Announces Federal Funding to Support Rural Businesses and Communities 2016-10-05 2016 2016-10 Democrat House ND Heidi Heitkamp H001069 www.heitkamp.senate.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp, ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture Subcommittee on Rural Development and Energy, announced 11 federal grants and one federal loan totaling over $1.7 million that will support employment and infrastructure improvements for small businesses in rural North Dakota. “Rural North Dakota is a top priority of mine in the U.S. Senate,” said Heitkamp. “These small communities are homes to families, friends, and small businesses that make up the heart of rural America, that’s why we need to make smart investments in their future. Today’s federal funding will help rural businesses find new markets, develop their products, and expand to create new employment opportunities.” The federal grant funding is made available through U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development’s Rural Business Development Grants that assist small and emerging businesses in rural communities with training and development to expand their businesses. The grants are distributed as follows: Anamoose: $218,462 in federal funding to renovate an existing building that will be leased as a restaurant which will serve locally grown produce and meats as well as support job growth in the area. Dakota College, Bottineau: $108,800 in federal funding to expand the aquaponics facility that will help students and local entrepreneurs start businesses to grow employment opportunities and increase food production. Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians: $103,994 in federal funding that will provide training and education to support locally produced foods and services at local farmers markets. REAP Investment Fund, Inc.: $86,764 in federal funding to support training and education of local producers to grow foods like grapes and other seasonal fruits and vegetables that can be sold to schools, hospitals, and nursing homes as well as help with expanding the North Dakota wine industry. Tuttle Betterment Club, Inc.: $51,090 in federal funding to purchase kitchen equipment that will assist entrepreneurs in developing their food product for resale to grow their small businesses. Bowman County Fair Association: $37,000 in federal funding to purchase kitchen equipment that will help entrepreneurs develop their food product for resale to grow their small businesses. Pembina County Job Development Authority: $30,000 in federal funding that will provide education and training to small businesses to help with employee retention and expansion. Michigan, N.D.: $26,910 in federal funding to purchase kitchen equipment that can be leased to a local restaurant for its reopening, which could help create new jobs. Dakota College, Bottineau: $21,482 in federal funding that will support student and individual education of sustainable vegetable farming techniques and other agricultural training for the region. Sacred Pipe Resource Center: $17,000 in federal funding to gather and assess information on the local food economy for the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation that will help identify which foods are consumed and can be grown locally. Hettinger: $15,715 in federal funding to lease fitness equipment to Jackson Training Systems to expand health and wellness services and support employment. The federal loan is made available through U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development’s Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant Program and is distributed as follows: West River Telecommunications Cooperative: $1 million in federal lending that will assist the Sakakawea Medical Center construct a hospital and clinic in Hazen. Heitkamp, a member of the Senate Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee has long been promoting local economic growth by working to help boost small businesses and employment opportunities in small communities and rural areas. In March, Heitkamp introduced her Startup Entrepreneur Empowerment Delivery (SEED) Act that would create a federal pilot program to grant up to $120,000 in federal funds to small cities with a population of 200,000 or less that would be used to help small business get started.
