U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today joined about a dozen New Americans during their class on the U.S. government as they prepare to take the U.S. citizenship test. New Americans have brought a diversity of culture and traditions to North Dakota and they play a crucial role in the growth of our states thriving economy. Its important that we provide them with the support and outreach they need as they settle in our communities, said Heitkamp. Its not easy to leave your home especially under the dire circumstances many of these refugees have fled from -- and acclimate to a new country, culture, and language, but the Global Friends Coalition is working hard to support refugees and their families and give them the tools and education they need to not only feel at home in North Dakota, but to truly become a part of our communities. It was evident in todays class with New Americans that Global Friends is making a difference in the lives of those who have been resettled or have otherwise moved to the Grand Forks region, and it was wonderful to see the valuable impacts these volunteers are having in the community. The Global Friends Coalition also provided classes for New Americans during the summer focusing on available services in Grand Forks, such as bank loans, fire and police protection, and social services. The Global Friends Coalition works closely with the city of Grand Forks, Grand Forks Public Health, and several other agencies to provide a safety net for New Americans.
